Jesus said, “it is finished” as He hung on the cross. While this is an unprecedented Easter, no one anticipated celebrating THIS DAY in our pajamas at home. And while we couldn’t have predicted a pandemic, none of it caught God by surprise!
While we don’t desire to spend Easter sheltered in place…I can’t think of a better time for the HOPE found in the message of Easter. The Good News of the Gospel encompasses ALL of our concerns about life and life after death.
On the cross, Jesus said “it is finished”.
What was finished? His work of redemption was finished. The satisfaction of God’s judgment was finished. The payment for our sins was finished. The work of His atonement was finished. The reconciliation of sinful man to a Holy God was finished. Victory over sin and Satan were finished.
When Jesus cried out “it is finished,” He meant “it was ALL finished in the past, it is still finished in the present, and it will remain finished in the future.”
Our account was paid in full. Jesus was declaring the debt owed to His Father was wiped away completely and forever. Not that Jesus wiped away any debt that He owed to the Father; rather, Jesus eliminated the debt owed by mankind—the debt of our sin.
While Jesus’ work on earth was finished…ours has just begun. Jesus’ finished work on the cross was the beginning of new life for all who were once “dead in trespasses and sins” but who are now made “alive with Christ”.
