At Freedom Bible Church, we have been teaching through the Book of Habakkuk. Over the course of our study, I have really grown to love this prophet and this book. It is such a raw, honest look at Habakkuk’s prayer journal and his conversations with God. It’s also an amazing picture of how Habakkuk transforms from a worrier in chapter 1 to a worshiper in chapter 3. Though his circumstances haven’t changed, Habakkuk has. He has a renewed faith and intimacy with God. Habakkuk has learned to praise God anyhow.

What led to Habakkuk’s renewed faith? In Habakkuk 3, the prophet outlines three spiritual disciplines that he put into practice to grow his faith. Those same spiritual disciplines are available to us as well. 

PRAYER – Habakkuk 3:1-2. 

Habakkuk’s attitude in prayer is this: God I don’t always understand Your ways but I do know who You are. Habakkuk knows who God is. He knows God is merciful, trustworthy, and powerful. He knows that God has worked mightily in the past and asks Him to do it again. 

REMEMBRANCE – Habakkuk 3:3-15. 

One of the most powerful things we can do in prayer is taking time to remember who God is & what He’s done. In these verses, Habakkuk paints this glorious picture of God & reminds himself of how God worked throughout Israel’s history. God’s past faithfulness assures us of His future faithfulness.

TRUST – Habakkuk 3:16-19. 

Habakkuk gives one of the greatest confessions of faith found anywhere in Scripture. He knows his nation will be judged & invaded. He knows many people will captured & killed. He knows that Jerusalem & the temple will be destroyed. Yet he tells God that he will trust Him no matter what happens and he will praise Him anyhow!

My prayer for you as you read and study the book of Habakkuk is that you grow to have a Habakkuk 3 kind of faith where you learn to trust the Lord no matter what. But here’s the deal…you can’t have a Chapter Three faith until you’ve wrestled with Chapter One questions and spent time in Chapter Two waiting.

It’s in low times…in the valleys of life that God proves His faithfulness, His character, His grace, and His goodness. When I first started following Jesus, I had really immature faith. But after following Jesus for over 30 years, I’ve walked with Jesus for enough yesterdays to trust Him with all of my tomorrows.
